A MESSAGE FROM PROVOST PAT REID AND COUNCILLOR ANGUS MACDONALD
On behalf of the local organising committee, we should like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the first ever Royal National Mod held in Falkirk.
Local companies, community clubs and organisations, shops, pubs and hotels all contributed either financially or by providing resources at the disposal of the Mod. Individuals too numerous to mention from throughout our area also lent their support.
During the week itself dozens of local volunteers helped by acting as stewards, drivers, guides and in so many other different ways.
The Mod competition events were well attended by local people who were treated to great music from both children and adults climaxing in the massed pipe bands/ choirs public performance in Callendar Square – a never to be forgotten experience despite the rain. Most of the events on the Mod fringe programme attracted wide support.
All throughout the week and particularly as our visitors left on Saturday, the Committee was deluged by complimentary remarks commenting on the many warm and friendly kindnesses extended to the visitors by the people of the Falkirk area.
This was an historic occasion linking the present with the Falkirk area’s past links with the Highlands through the cattle markets held in Shieldhill, Roughcastle and, of course, Stenhousemuir.
The people of the Falkirk area rose to the occasion by serving up a welcome which was of inestimable worth in presenting an image which enhanced our standing greatly in the eyes of the thousands of visitors from within Scotland and from overseas.
While there were undoubtedly economic benefits to be derived from so many visitors, we are very grateful that this welcome extended by all concerned will provide even greater benefits as far as our reputation as a community is concerned.

Provost Pat Reid, Mod 2008 Finance Convener
BBC Radio Scotland report on the Mod coming to Falkirk here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7663067.stm
Falkirk Council and the local Falkirk Branch of An Comunn Gaidhealach are currently co-ordinating arrangements for MOD 2008 FALKIRK, which will be held from 10th to 18th October.
“THE MOD IS COMING HOME”
To some 'The Mod is coming home' might seem a curious slogan to use as the Mod has never been held in Falkirk before however the slogan arises from the annual Trysts that were held in Falkirk over the centuries where drovers and cattle dealers from all over the Highlands and Islands would converge on the town to buy and sell their livestock. The Mod is Coming Home because the whole concept of the Highland Gathering had originated in Falkirk.
Visitors already gather in the area to see The Falkirk Wheel, the colossal rotating boatlift which has restored Scotland’s canal network.
Other famous landmarks and attractions include Callendar House, a mansion and museum set in a magnificent park, the Antonine Wall, the Dunmore Pineapple, Blackness Castle, Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway and “Big in Falkirk” – Scotland’s National Street Arts Festival.
Falkirk has a vibrant and attractive town centre boasting some of the best shopping and entertainment outside Scotland’s major cities. The mix of national stores located in the High Street and in The Mall Falkirk and Callendar Square shopping centres is complimented by the wonderful choice of small independent stores located in the 26 shopping streets situated around the town centre. In contrast to the High Street's mainly national retailers, the streets off the High Street are full of smaller, friendly, independent businesses offering shoppers something a little bit special. If you want a unique shopping experience, join the millions of people who shop in Falkirk every year. You'll be inspired by the quality of service and variety of products on offer, earning Falkirk a reputation for being one of the finest retail destinations in Scotland. Falkirk was recently acclaimed "Scotland's Best Shopping Town"
The Falkirk area is also the place for a great nightlife. There is a wide selection of pubs, bars and nightclubs and a 12 screen Cineworld multiplex cinema right in the heart of town.
Eating out isn't a problem either. From lunch in a canal-side inn to sophisticated dining in a top restaurant or hotel, from morning coffee to a night on the town, there's no shortage of great places to eat in and around Falkirk. You'll not be disappointed with the choice of styles, from traditional Scottish, French, Spanish, American, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Greek, Danish, Mexican, Japanese and more.
Falkirk also has excellent train links to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling, all witihn 25 minutes.
