FALKIRK HOSTS FIRST FAIRTRADE MOD
5 years of hard work has finally paid off for the Fairtrade Falkirk Steering Group as news came through that the People of the Falkirk Council area have been awarded Fairtrade Zone status – only the 5th in Scotland to do so. The good news was announced by the First Minister, Alex Salmond, at the opening of the World’s first Fairtrade Royal National Mod. Jacqueline Traynor, Chair of the steering group said “Following the success of the town of Falkirk achieving Fairtrade status in 2006 we are delighted that the whole Falkirk Council area is now a Fairtrade zone. I would like to thank the steering group for all their hard work over the past 5 years. Fairtrade makes a real difference to some of the world’s most vulnerable and hard working people. The people of Falkirk have recognised this fact and responded in their usual generous way.” Sarah McKenzie, Vice Chair & Marketing Coordinator at Falkirk Town Centre Management said “We would like to thank all of the retailers, cafes, restaurants, community organisations, schools, churches and businesses for all their support in helping Falkirk achieve this prestigious award of Fairtrade Zone.” Provost Pat Reid, who is also a member of the steering group, said “This has been a great effort on the part of all concerned. However, there are still plenty of businesses which could come on board and take part in this community project by simply selling a minimum of 2 Fairtrade products.” Any businesses interested in joining or would like more information about selling Fairtrade produce should contact Sarah McKenzie on 01324 611293.
