Lewis woman takes Gaelic singer title 7/12/08
Margaret Stewart from Lewis has won the Gaelic Singer of the Year award at the final of the Scots Traditional Music Awards held in Glasgow on Saturday night.
About 450 people packed into the Old Fruitmarket concert hall in the city centre for the event.
Margaret Stewart is a native Gaelic singer from Coll, Lewis. She is a former national Mod Gold Medal winner and her latest album, her first solo work, Togaidh mi mo Sheòlta has been released recently.
Runners up were Gillebride Macmillan from South Uist, Maeve Mackinnon of Barra connections and Griograir Labhruidh resident in South Uist.
Uibhisteach Julie Fowlis was a runner-up in the Best Live Act category which was won by Sgìtheanaich Peatbog Faeries.
Fiona of the Mackenzie Sisters fame missed out on the Best Album section which was awarded to Duncan Chisholm. Mary Ann Kennedy is na Seòid were also runner-up in the category.
Young Gaelic singer Catriona Watt from Stornoway along with folk group Bodega - which includes musician Norrie Maciver of Carloway, were praised as up coming artists though the title went to the duo of Jeana Leslie & Siobhan Miller who recently won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2008.
Capercaillie was marked for the group’s Services to Gaelic Music while the Hall of Fame was filled by the Alexander Brothers, Runrig, Alasdair Gillies, Pipe Major Ian McLellan, Dougie Maclean, Jean Redpath & John Carmichael.
