Ceol 'na h-Alba - Traditional Music Concert

Piping ‘Hot’ Extravaganza

Before the Mod comes home to Falkirk in October, fans of traditional music can get into the groove with a one off concert in June which will showcase the musical skills of pupils across the Falkirk Council area.

The traditional music concert - Ceol ‘na h-Alba - celebrates the work of the Falkirk Traditional Music Project (FTMP) and takes place in Falkirk Town Hall on Thursday 5th June.

School bands plus three of Scotland's top traditional bands - the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Skerryvore and Box Club - will make it a night to remember with the driving sounds of bagpipes, kicking rhythms of guitar and some astounding drumming.

The hottest tickets in town are on sale at the Steeple Box office on 01324 506850 priced at £5/ £3 concessions.

Councillor Angus MacDonald, Convener of Mod 2008 said: "The FTMP is going from strength to strength. The project has taken pupils - some with no previous music skills - on a journey which will climax at next months concert and the Royal National Mod in October.

"It's a real achievement for all involved and I'm sure the young people will be thrilled to be sharing a stage with some of the biggest and brightest traditional music talents in Scotland."

School Bands playing on the night are:

  • The Falkirk Junior Trad Band - led by tutor Marc Duff, formerly with Capercaille
  • The Falkirk Senior Trad Band - led by John Somerville of Box Club
  • The Falkirk Youth Pipe Band - led by piper Logan Tannock.

More than 90 pupils are currently involved in the Falkirk Traditional Music Project and the Falkirk Youth Pipe Band and two Falkirk Schools Traditional Bands have also been set up.

Falkirk is the venue for this year's Royal National Mod with an estimated 10,000 visitors and competitors heading for the area over an eight day period in October for a celebration of Gaelic music and culture.

The event, organised by An Comunn Gaidhealach (The Highland Association) and Falkirk Council, runs between 10th and 18th October and takes place in a number of venues in towns across the Falkirk area.
